Head-On Collision In Fayette County Sends Five To Local Hospitals

A three-car accident in Fayette County, West Virginia earlier this week left several people seriously injured according to a sheriff’s department spokesperson. Authorities say that a little before 10 a.m. this Monday the police received a 911 call regarding a three-car accident that took place on Sunday Road, near U.S. Route 60 in Hico, WV.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and discovered that the driver of one vehicle was trapped in the car and needed the Jaws of Life to extract the man before he could receive medical treatment. Four other people involved in the accident were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. Police say while the specific condition of the victims is unknown, none are believed to be suffering from life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation found that two vehicles driven by tourists were traveling south on Sunday Road when a third vehicle driven by a local man was heading north. Two of the cars then hit each other head-on near the crest of a hill, at which point, the driver of the third car attempted to steer off the road but lost control and crashed into the other cars.

So far, police have not released the names or ages of those involved. They also say they do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident. Police say they believe the cause of the wreck was that unfamiliar drivers were confused on a single-lane road.

As this case proves, head-on collisions are serious and have substantially higher fatality rates than other kinds of crashes, with the exception of rollovers. According to the NHTSA, two percent of crashes are head-on collisions, but these account for 10 percent of all fatal accidents. Head-on crashes more frequently result in death because of their abrupt nature; stopping forward movement so suddenly.
