Authorities in West Virginia say at least eight people have been injured in a boating accident that took place on the Ohio River near Ravenswood. According to a spokesperson for the state Division of Natural Resources, one boat crashed into another stationary boat and the accident resulted in injuries to occupants of both vessels. The accident occurred in Buffington Island and authorities say they are still investigating the Memorial Day collision to determine the cause.
Sadly, accidents like this one are far from uncommon. The 2011 Recreational Boating Statistics from the United States Coast Guard revealed that there was a decrease in the overall number of accidents, but tragically, an increase in the number of deaths. In 2011, there were a total of 4,588 recreational boating accidents. Of those, 758 fatalities produced fatalities. Sadly, this represents an almost 13 percent increase in the number of fatalities seen in 2010, a worrisome trend.
The report also confirmed what many people already assumed, that summer was an especially deadly time for boating accidents. In fact, the report found that July was the month with the most accidents and the most fatalities – 1,215 accidents and 142 deaths. Busy afternoons were the most deadly time of day, with the most accidents taking place between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
The report found that the causes of these boating accidents frequently included operator inattention, operator inexperience, excessive speed and machinery failure. The leading cause of boating fatalities was alcohol, with 125 deaths linked to the consumption of alcohol.
